Injuries and Trauma
Orthopedic Trauma
Injury and trauma can affect the bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues. Trauma can occur during a fall, collision, or motor vehicle crash, resulting in a broken bone, also called a fracture. The most common causes of fractures are injuries, prolonged stress from overuse, and bone weakening diseases, such as osteoporosis or tumors. Surgeons at Orthopaedic Associates have the specialized expertise to diagnose and treat complex fractures and traumatic injuries.
Your doctor will classify the type of fracture you have to plan treatment appropriately. Common fracture characteristics and classifications are described below.
- Simple or closed fracture: Bone fragments do not penetrate the skin
- Incomplete or partial fracture: A crack that does not completely break the bone into two pieces
- Greenstick fracture: An incomplete fracture with a bowed bone; it is more common in children
- Complete fracture: The bone is completely broken into separate pieces
- Compound or open fracture: Bone fragments penetrate the skin
Surgery is recommended for fractures that do not heal properly or when the bones have broken in such a way that they are unlikely to remain aligned when set with a cast. The type of surgery you have will depend on the location and type of your fracture. You may have general anesthesia for surgery or your doctor may numb the area with a nerve block.
